Better Call Saul includes plenty of easter eggs and references to its parent series, Breaking Bad. Some are so subtle that fans may have completely missed them. During an episode of Breaking Bad, Saul mentions a story to Walter White, which is later shown in Better Call Saul. Here’s the hidden reference you may not have caught in season 1 episode 10.

Saul helps Walt launder money in ‘Breaking Bad’

Saul Goodman first appears in Breaking Bad Season 2, in an episode aptly named “Better Call Saul.” Walt and Jesse use Saul as Badger’s legal counsel after Badger gets picked up by the police. This is the episode where Saul delivers his line about “Lalo” and “Ignacio” which would later spawn two characters in Better Call Saul.

In season 3, Walt needs Saul Goodman’s help figuring out a way to launder a large amount of money he made from making meth. In the episode “Abiquiu,” he and Skyler meet with Saul to come up with a plan to launder the money. Skyler is unimpressed by Saul’s plan to pretend that Walt invested gambling winnings in laser tag.

‘Better Call Saul’ showed Saul’s Kevin Costner story from ‘Breaking Bad’

Skyler later suggests that buying the car wash Walt used to work at would make more sense for laundering money. Saul finally says to Walt, “Let me tell you something. If you’re committed enough you can make any story work. I once convinced a woman I was Kevin Costner and it worked because I believed it. Alright, it has nothing to do with the story.”

In the Better Call Saul Season 1 finale, Jimmy returns to his hometown of Cicero, Illinois, where he reunites with his old friend Marco. The pair spend the weekend running cons and Jimmy wakes up with a woman standing over him. “Hey! You are not Kevin Costner,” she says to him. “I was last night,” he responds. The woman and her friend then storm out of Marco’s place.

‘Better Call Saul’ Season 1 Episode 10 referenced ‘Belize’

In the same episode of Better Call Saul, Jimmy hosts Bingo for a group of senior citizens. When he selects B-5, Jimmy says, “B as in Belize. Beautiful place so I’ve heard. I would love to go there but let’s face it that’s never gonna happen. None of us is ever leaving this godforsaken wasteland.”

Believe it or not, this is a subtle throwback to Breaking Bad. In season 5 episode 10, Walt meets with Saul in the aftermath of Hank learning the truth about his criminal activity. Saul finally asks whether Walt has “given any thought to sending him on a trip to Belize.” This is Saul’s euphemism for killing someone off, an idea that Walt quickly rejects.

Better Call Saul returns with new episodes on July 11.
